Start by making an overview of the essay. Go through the picture below:
The student starts by writing a “main point” at the top of the chart. It is her “answer” to your question posed by the exam.
Underneath the main point the student writes two “reasons” to guide the main point. They are broad and never too specific. However, they must be unique. The reason why really should not be much like one another.
Below each one of the reasons, the student writes two “details.” they are more specific. They offer the good reasons and explain why they will have cited the reasons. They might also include examples from the student’s life that support the causes.
Here’s an example outline for the question: “what’s the best gift to offer to a child?” It was compiled by an student that is actual. View it closely:
The student has filled within the outline point-form that is using (not complete sentences). Her main point is gift that is“Best pet.”
Her two reasons are “it is educational” and “it is an excellent friend.”
The facts through the first reason are “learn responsibility” and “learn stages of customwriting.com paper writing life.” The facts through the second reason are “never judgmental” and “children often alone these days.” The student has bigger ideas. she is planning to write on how care that is taking of pet teaches responsibility and this woman is likely to write that students are along because their parents are often away. nevertheless the outline is merely her ideas that are initial.
The others of this article will show just how to turn this outline into a complete essay. I’ll use English that is simple throughout article. High level students should probably use more vocabulary that is advanced sentence structure.
I teach my students to create a four paragraph essay in the writing section that is independent. This particular essay is long enough and will be finished in the time allowed. High level students might try writing a five essay that is paragraph.
The four paragraph structure is:
- Introductory Paragraph
- Body Paragraph 1
- Body Paragraph 2
- Concluding Paragraph
Let’s start with the paragraph that is introductory
My students use a sentence-by-sentence process to write their introductions. The technique is it:
- Sentence one: A “hook.” This is certainly an interesting sentence that comes before your main point. It references the relevant question and draws your reader in to the essay.
- Sentence two: your primary point. In one single good, clear sentence state your primary point. Don’t be too much time. Get to the purpose!
- Sentence three: a sentence that is transitional. Try something such as “I feel this method for two reasons.”
- Sentence four: A one sentence summary of the first reason. Begin this sentence with “first” (you can leave this out if you are low on time).
- Sentence five: A one sentence summary of one’s second reason. Begin this sentence with “second” (you can leave this out if you should be low on time).
Talking about the relevant question above and with the given template, you could write an introduction like this:
“There are many gifts that are great may be fond of a kid. In my opinion that the best gift to give a young child is a pet. I feel in this manner for two main reasons, that I will explore within the essay that is following. First, a pet can be extremely educational. Second, a pet may be an excellent friend to a young child.
Observe that there aren’t any references to your details in this paragraph. Save those for the physical body paragraphs.
Step three: Writing a body paragraph
This is your possiblity to show your essay off writing ability. I don’t teach a strict model for this area of the essay.
I actually do however, have some basic rules. They are:
- Each reason gets its own paragraph. Don’t combine your reasons into one paragraph.
- Start your first paragraph with a word that is transitional phrase like “first,” “to start out with,” and your second paragraph with “second” or “secondly.”
- At the start of each physical body paragraph, clearly state your reason. Don’t use a hook, just get to the point. Next, state your details one after another, expanding every one to 3 or four sentences. It is possible to expand by including a personal example from your life. Including examples that are personal your lifetime into the essay is okay. In fact, i would recommend it.
- Attempt to use transitional phrases in in the middle of your details (“moreover,” “furthermore,” “also”).
Listed here is an illustration body paragraph made using the above outline:
“to start with, a pet is a very gift that is educational. Having a pet teaches children responsibility. A pet has to be fed every day and get given to be able to exercise. Who owns a pet even offers to observe the health of the pet and take action if it becomes sick. Practicing this type or types of responsibility will make a young child more aged. Remember that the outline was followed by this paragraph above quite closely. I stated my reason after which supported it with details. I expanded the information significantly through the point-form used in my outline.
My second body paragraph is written in much the same way:
“Secondly, I feel that a pet makes great friend. It really is good for children to own pets because they’re never judgmental. A young child may have a bad day at school or he may be in a fight together with his friends, but he can never fight together with his pet. It will love him unconditionally. Furthermore, pets can prevent children from being lonely. These days parents are often too busy to pay time with regards to children. They often times leave their kids home alone. This might leave some kids feeling lonely, but those with pets will never feel alone.“
And that is the body that is whole of essay! Pay attention to how I used transitional words (“moreover” and “furthermore”) in the middle the two details in each paragraph.
I’m not a big fan of lengthy concluding paragraphs, for the reason that the independent essay is pretty short. But i actually do teach a three sentence technique:
- Sentence one: re-state your point that is main and with a phrase like “to sum it up…”
- Sentence two: restate your two reasons, starting with a phrase that is transitional “this is because…”
- Sentence three: yet again, restate your point that is main but different words
Here’s a conclusion for the essay we’ve been dealing with:
“To sum it up, personally i think that a pet could be the absolute best gift to offer to a young child. This is because pets are extremely educational, and additionally they make great friends. There actually is no better gift that a child can receive than a pet.”
